Comparison of “Fake Fly GPS” Android Apps for Pokemon GO
You want to hack Pokemon GO Geo-Positioning System (GPS), so that you can virtually fly around the world and empty out all the Pokestops there. Sounds reasonable to me, as who wants to leave the couch in the basement and do all this stupid walking around.
But do not sideload yet another .APK file, from some shady site! Now – there is an App for that. Actually, a bunch of Android Apps on Google Play Store, that you can choose from. No need to root the phone.
And nice folks at Google blessed each of the Apps, and maybe scanned them for more obvious hacks and viruses. You know that they gotta be safe, cause developers who publish on the Play Store have to sign-up with Google and pay some $25 once, which is certain to keep extremely petty criminals away. Compare that with Apple AppStore, where you pay $100 per year, which keeps really cheap criminals away. And Apple does take weeks to approve an App, pretending like they test it that long. Google does no pretending and no testing, but may remove Apps, after discovering that they are stealing users’ identity information.
So, here is the list of the “GPS Fly Apps“, with some explanations:
Fake GPS JoyStick has the highest number of Stars, of the five Apps being compared here – 4.3. That’s huge, in today’s world of so many crummy Apps, and this app has to satisfy a bunch of rather judgemental and so quick to anger players. Fake GPS JoyStick has been developed by ExcellentsApps, an established Apps vendor, with three other Apps in the Store, each with a 4+ Star rating. Their last update was on November 1st, which puts them only a couple of Niantec releases behind, as of the writing of this article. ExcellentsApps has been updating regularly and is likely to close the gap shortly. With hundreds of thousands of downloads, they must have been tested in all kinds of environments, on all kinds of devices. Officially they support Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher, which covers some 83% of today’s Android phones in operation. Likely, a higher percentage of the phones that a typical Pokemon GO player wields are covered.
Fake gps – fake location is an older and still formidable contender in the Fake GPS app space. Sporting 3.8 Stars and over a million downloads, it is big. The App was developed by Andev, a very substantial developer, with several earlier Apps specifically in the GPS field. Android support claimed goes back to 2.3 (Gingerbread), which is quite a feat, and may show the depth of company’s testing methodology and the range of available test units. But, with no update since August, now some seven Niantec releases behind, Andev’s commitment to this import field is in question now.
Fake GPS has 3.6 Stars and over a million downloads, likely due to having been present in the Store longer. The developer ByteRev has one other App. The GPS App has not updated since October 14th, some three Niantec releases. Support extends to Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), that should include just about any device worth owning.
GPS JoyStick from The App Ninjas rates a 3.1. This is the only published App from the Ninjas, so this may be a small and non-commercial effort. But with an update on November 4, the developer continues to work on it. Support for 4.4 (KitKat) provides for broad, if not universal coverage. But, there are too many “Does not work” comments on the Store, to consider the App ready for prime time.
At 2 Stars, last updated on October 4, Fly GPS App does not warrant our attention. Described as “Stupid waste of time”, it has only been included for completeness sake.
Once we finish setting up several test Android devices, we’ll do further evaluation and testing of the Apps listed above.
